Why is Pattaya in Thailand The Best?

Pattaya, Thailand, is one of the best locations in the world to complete your PADI diving certifications at all levels, from beginner to professional. Here’s why:

Pattaya City Thailand

1. Pattaya Has Ideal Training Conditions

Warm tropical waters year-round 🌊

While the southern part of Thailand closes for half the year, Pattaya has an all-year-round dive season. Mostly protected from monsoon weather, we probably see three or fewer trips canceled each year due to wind preventing the boats from venturing out. The water conditions on average are great. October to February offers the best visibility (15m-30m), with May and August usually aligning with great tides and some surprisingly good dive conditions too. The rest of the year has an average visibility of about 5-10m. The Gulf of Thailand is always between 28-30°C and sunny, even when it rains.

Why Pattaya is Great for Diving All Year:

✅ Warm tropical waters: 28-30°C, even when it rains
✅ Best visibility (15m-30m): October – February
✅ Great tides & surprisingly good diving: May & August
✅ Average visibility (5m-10m): Remainder of the year

The Diving in Pattaya provides consistent diving conditions that make for great training scuba divers and dive pros alike. The Pattaya Islands are a reliable destination for training and fun dives alike.

2. Diverse & Exciting Dive Sites

Diving in Pattaya, in the Gulf of Thailand, offers a huge variety of dive sites, including coral reef dives, muck diving, drift diving, and deep wreck diving. With dive locations around both the Pattaya Near Islands (Koh Sak, Koh Lan, Koh Khrok, Koh Nok) and the Pattaya Far Islands (Koh Phai, Koh Klung Badan, Koh Man Wichai, and Koh Rin), as well as the Samae San Marine Park (Koh Samae San, Koh Chuang, Koh Ron Kon, Koh Chan, Shark Fin Rock, Hin Chalarm, Hin Yai Pinnacle, and more), Pattaya has dive sites perfect for all levels of diver training. Whether you are completing entry-level open water training, advanced courses, specialties, wreck diving, or technical diving, Pattaya provides everything needed in a diver training ground. Visibility is generally good, and mild currents make it ideal for divers of all skill levels.

3. Why Pattaya Waters Create the Best Divers

” Pattaya allows you to dive and train in a range of conditions from excellent to challenging.”

Many people assume that perfect visibility makes for the best dive training—but the truth is, real-world diving conditions vary. Pattaya’s waters provide a diverse and dynamic training environment, making it one of the best places in Thailand to develop strong, adaptable divers.

Unlike some locations with crystal-clear water year-round, Pattaya offers a mix of excellent to challenging conditions. Divers here experience seasonal currents, variable visibility, deep shipwrecks, and diverse marine life, all of which prepare them for real-world diving scenarios.

By training in Pattaya’s dynamic waters, divers adapt to different environments, improve their buoyancy control, and gain confidence handling unpredictable conditions. This experience is invaluable for advanced divers, Divemasters, and future Instructors, ensuring that those who dive, lead, and teach in Pattaya can confidently work anywhere in the world!

4. Pattaya The Wreck Diving in Thailand Capital

Nowhere else in Thailand offers this level of wreck diving variety, making Pattaya a must-visit for wreck diving enthusiasts.

Pattaya essentially started the wreck diving scene in Thailand, with the Hardeep Wreck, the Bremen Steamship Wreck, the 600-year-old Pottery Wreck, and the world-famous Vertical PAK1 Wreck. Wreck divers were visiting Pattaya to explore sunken vessels long before other destinations in the region. Over the years, Pattaya has gained a reputation as the place to learn wreck diving, refine skills, and even become a wreck diving instructor.

Not all the original wrecks are frequently visited today—nothing lasts forever, as they say. However, the Hardeep Wreck remains largely intact and is still dived regularly. The Bremen Wreck is visited a few times per year, but Pattaya now has a total of seven shipwrecks, ensuring that wreck diving remains an everyday activity.

Besides the classic Pattaya wrecks, the Royal Thai Navy intentionally sank the first WWII landing craft, HTMS Khram, in 2003, followed by the HTMS Kut (or Khood Wreck) in 2006. These were both massive warships from the World War II era. Later additions include the HTMS Mataphon and the T-Wrecks (T.94 & T.95), which were sunk in September 2024. Nowhere else in Thailand offers this level of wreck diving.

Pattaya’s Seven Shipwrecks:

Hardeep Wreck – One of Thailand’s most famous and well-preserved wreck dives

Bremen Steamship Wreck – Explored a few times per year

HTMS Khram (2003) WWII-era landing craft

HTMS Kut (2006) – WWII-era warship

HTMS Mattaphon (2011) WWII-era warship

T-Wrecks (T.94 & T.95) (2024) – This double wreck sinking is newest wreck dive site in Thailand and has 2 wrecks side by side.

5. Unique Marine Life, Including Seahorses, Turtles, and Macrolife

” One of the most important points about diving in Pattaya is its amazing biodiversity and abundant local marine life.”

Despite outdated online reports about poor visibility mostly due to “Disneyland divers” expecting Great Barrier Reef-like conditions. However, what isn’t often talked about is the incredible marine life and biodiversity present here.

Pattaya is the best place in Thailand to dive with sea turtles. It’s not a matter of if but when you will see a hawksbill or green turtle. In fact, the Pattaya Near Islands are home to more than 30 resident turtles, and we encounter at least one or two on a daily basis.

Seahorses are an extremely endangered species, but a 2011 study by the iSeahorse Project discovered multiple breeding grounds around the local islands. Pattaya divers now frequently enjoy muck dives, venturing over the sandy bays to seek out and photograph these fascinating sea creatures.

Other unique encounters include incredible macrolife such as seadragons, octopuses, dragonets, leafy filefish, nudibranchs, and more.

6. High Quality Life style , Cost-Effective & Convenient

” Pattaya flex shines as an unbeatable diver training location.”

Whether on a long holiday or living in Pattaya, Thailand, you’ll find a high-quality lifestyle is more affordable and convenient than almost all other diving destinations. When you factor in location, cost of living, food, and the incredible range of activities, amenities and diving experiences available on your doorstep, Pattaya flex shines as an unbeatable diver training location.

Pattaya is a seaside town located close to Bangkok—just a two-hour drive from the city and less than 1.5 hours from BKK airport. This makes Pattaya the fastest end-to-end trip from home to hotel compared to any other Thai dive destination. The easy access also attracts a large number of flights, often making airfare significantly cheaper than flights to Phuket or other Southeast Asian dive locations.

You’ll be amazed at the variety of accommodations available in Pattaya for the price. From budget hostels to luxury hotels, Airbnbs, condos, and apartments, there’s something for every traveler. Even budget-friendly options feel special compared to other destinations.

The cost of living and food should also be noted. You can enjoy anything from Western cuisine to local Thai dishes, and all of it is spectacular and well-priced. Pattaya is significantly cheaper than Phuket or islands like Koh Tao or Koh Lanta, where inflated island pricing can leave a bitter taste for travelers.

Compared to other diving destinations
Pattaya offers exceptional value.

Why Pattaya is the Best:

✅ Only 1.5 hours from Bangkok (BKK Airport) – The most accessible dive destination in Thailand
✅ Cheaper flights than Phuket or Koh Tao
✅ Superior Quality Budget-friendly accommodations – From hostels to luxury condos
✅ Lower cost of living & dining – Amazing food at a fraction of island prices

Unlike islands like Koh Tao or Koh Lanta, where prices are inflated for tourists, Pattaya offers exceptional quality at great prices.

7. Pattaya: The Birthplace of Pro Diver Training in Thailand

Pattaya is where it all began—the starting point of Thailand’s professional dive training scene. The country’s very first PADI dive center was established right here on Pattaya Beach by Bill Burbridge of Seafari Dive Centre, who also pioneered Thailand’s first PADI Instructor Development Centre (IDC).

This legacy laid the foundation for thousands of divers to pursue professional training in Pattaya, setting the standard for dive education in Thailand. Today, Pattaya continues to be home to some of the world’s top dive centers, carrying forward its reputation as a premier destination for Divemaster and Instructor training.

From seasoned dive professionals to aspiring instructors, Pattaya remains the heartbeat of professional dive training in Thailand—a legacy that still thrives today!
